wordy wednesday: at the drop of a hat

Today’s idiom: at the drop of a hat

Meaning: immediately

Origin: It seems that a lot of sources talk about this being used in the 19th century when dropping a hat signaled the beginning of a fight.  However, there is a quote from Register of Debates in Congress written in 1837 where it is not in reference to fighting.  Another mystery.
